Lalibela
Lalibela is a town in the Lasta Amhara Region. Lalibela is most famous for its eleven rock-hewn churches attributed to King Lalibela of the Zagwe Dynasty. Carved from the living rock, these magnificent rock-hewn churches were built between the 7th and 13th centuries and still active today as places of worship and pilgrimage. There are two main groups of churches located on the north and south of the river Jordan. Tunnels, passageways and trenches connect the churches. The northern cluster includes Medhane Alem, believed to be the largest monolithic church in the world. Isolated from the other churches to the west, is the impressive monolithic Church of Saint George.
