Sport Fishing On Lake Victoria

Lake Victoria supports Africa's largest inland fishery, with the majority of the catch being the invasive Nile perch, which was introduced in the Lake in the 1950s. The fresh water lake is home to several fish species which makes it a good fishing area. Some of the fish include Singida tilapia and Victoria tilapia which are now endangered species. Other commonly observed species included: Marbled lungfish, Elephant-snout fish, Ripon barbel, African sharptooth catfish, silver butter catfish and Semutundu (Bagrus docmak).

The activity is done all year round with exception of the April/May rainy season. The commonly caught fish is the Nile perch which is from approximately 8-80 kg in weight. Trolling with lures is the main method of fishing used.

Speedboats of between 6-10 metres, powered by twin outboard engines are used for the activity. The boats have a large seating capacity but cater for a maximum of 4 people fishing at any one time; this is to avoid issues like line tangling. Fibre glass 24 foot long “canoes” powered by an outboard engine are also available for smaller groups of 2-3 fishermen and usually best for day trips.
